As a junior, he specialised in time trials, even winning a bronze medal in the World Championships for cyclists aged under 23. When he became a professional in 2011, he specialised in bunch sprints, winning 19 stages across the three Grand Tours, and taking 89 wins in his professional career.

Like Caspar Kittel he was a pupil of Heinrich Schütz and published Schütz' 1657 collection Zwölff Geistlichen Gesänge (SWV420-31). He may have been related to Johann Christian Kittel (1732-1809), one of the last pupils of J. S. Bach.

Caspar Kittel was a German Baroque theorbist and composer at the Dresden Hofkapelle. He was a pupil, then colleague of Heinrich Schütz, and preceded Schütz on the Kapellmeister's second sojourn in Italy from 1624. His brother was Christoph Kittel. His music was heavily influenced by the poetry of Martin Opitz.
