He maintained a distance from the political developments of those decades, while nonetheless seeking in his writing to reframe political phenomena as ethical problems. Alongside Gide and the American novelist Edith Wharton, he was involved in providing aid to Belgian refugees in Paris following the 1914 German invasion of Belgium. Raised Catholic, Du Bos lost his faith as a young man, then regained it in 1927, and regarded this conversion as the central event of his life.

Theo Bos is a Dutch track cyclist, Olympic silver medalist and five-time world champion, who currently rides for UCI Track Team BEAT Cycling. A former road bicycle racing competitor, he is the brother of Olympic medalist in speed skating Jan Bos.

Jan Bos is a Dutch speedskater and sprint cyclist. In the late 1990s he was world champion in speed skating and he competed in the 1998 and 2002 Winter Olympics.

Thomas Bos is a retired speed skater from the Netherlands who was active between 1987 and 1993. In 1992, he set a new world record in the 3000 m. The same year he competed in 10000 m at the 1992 Winter Olympics and finished in 11th place. He won the same event at the national championships in 1990 and finished second in 1989 and third in 1992. His best all round achievement was a bronze medal at the national championships in 1990 and fourth place at the world championships in 1991.
